Opening Bell

Your Head Start on a Career in Finance

Finance is a word everybody has heard and hardly anybody can explain. Opening Bell is a tour of the real jobs inside it, and the people who do them.

Why I'm writing this

If nobody around you works in finance, it's hard to even know what to look up.

Ask a friend what a private equity associate does and you'll probably get a shrug. I'm a senior at Coppell High School, and I'm writing Opening Bell for students in that spot. It's a tour of the different jobs inside finance, from budgeting at a hospital to buying companies to planning someone's retirement.

How it works

Every job, three ways in

  1. Start with the basics

What does this person really do from Monday to Friday? Every job gets a plain-English explanation.

  2. Meet the people who do it

Five professionals per job, written as short stories instead of Q&A lists. Some took a straight path. Others stumbled in.

  3. Ask: is this you?

Each job ends with a quick gut check, so you can tell whether it might fit the way you think.
